Somatic Embodiment

Somatic embodiment is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the connection between mind and body. It involves paying attention to physical sensations and using that awareness to help process emotions, stress, and trauma. Our bodies often hold the effects of past experiences, and through somatic practices, we can begin to release tension, restore balance, and reconnect with ourselves in a deeper way.

At Bethesda Play Therapy and Healing Center, we offer somatic embodiment in Bethesda, MD for children, teens, and adults. By noticing sensations such as tightness, heaviness, warmth, or calm, clients can begin to understand emotional patterns that may not be fully accessible through talk therapy alone.

Using guided movement, breathwork, mindfulness, and body-based awareness, somatic embodiment supports emotional processing from the inside out. This approach helps clients feel more grounded, regulated, and connected.

Somatic embodiment can be especially helpful for those experiencing anxiety, trauma, stress, or a sense of disconnection. It also supports the development of bottom-up self-regulation, co-regulation, expansion of the window of tolerance, and greater interoceptive awareness.
